What it is
Overlay captions live in an always-on-top window powered by Document Picture-in-Picture (PiP). It stays above every other window no matter where your focus goes, and you can drag it to any position on any screen.
Captions re-wrap automatically to the window's width — shrink it to sit snugly under your slides, or stretch it across the edge of a venue screen. Position and size can be changed freely, even mid-presentation.
Browser extension — right on the page
The Newey extension overlays captions directly on the web page you're viewing. Not a separate window — right on the content, and they stay put even over fullscreen views like Google Slides presentation mode.
Same account, same engine as the web console. Turn it on from the toolbar: it listens to tab audio (videos, streams) or your microphone, and finished sessions land in your console history.
Over fullscreen presentations
Captions persist over browser fullscreen like Google Slides presentation mode. Clicks outside the captions pass through, so nothing blocks your presentation or playback.
Hover toolbar
Hover the captions for font size, source-text toggle, pause/resume, and stop — settings are remembered for your next session.
Drag placement with snapping
Drag captions anywhere on screen, right out to the edges, and they auto-align with a guide near the center.
One account with the console
Session history and usage share the same account as the web console — sessions from the extension can be reread and exported from your history.
When to use it
How to use it
Pick the [Subtitles] mode
In the console's launch modes, choose 'Subtitles' (over your slides).
Choose input and languages
Pick microphone (your voice) or tab audio (videos and streams) as the input, then select the input language and the translation language.
Press [Start]
The always-on-top overlay window opens automatically. If the browser blocks it, reopen it while live with the [Overlay window (PiP)] button.
Drag it into place
Move it below your slides or wherever you like, and resize it — captions reflow to the new width.
Details & tips
Hover controls
Hover to reveal the [Source] toggle, larger/smaller text, [⏸ Pause], [■ End session], and [✕ Close] — move away and only the captions remain.
Presets & background scrim
Start from the 'Cinema subtitles', 'Bold', or 'Minimal' presets. Turn the background scrim (translucent backdrop) off and an outline keeps the text readable.
Live changes, instantly
Text size, caption lines (2–4), background opacity, and source size (small/equal) all apply immediately while live.
Multi-window — captions on any screen you have
One overlay window is just the start. The [New window] button opens a caption-only popup you can place on a second monitor, a venue display, or an overflow-room screen — a single talk, on as many screens as the room needs.
Display modes — streaming and sentence
Choose how captions flow, per lane (source/translation). Everything switches while live.
Streaming
Captions flow word by word as you speak — the shortest latency, made for live stages.
Sentence
A calm mode that shows each sentence once it's complete — no update flicker, only finished sentences.
Hidden · show source
Hide the source lane to show translations only — you can also toggle it right from the PiP window's [Source] button.
Requirements & limitations
- The overlay window (Document PiP) works on desktop Chrome/Edge 116+ and Firefox 151+; Safari 18+ gets a simpler video-style floating window. Elsewhere, use the stage mode instead.
- On macOS, the browser overlay cannot appear above Keynote/PowerPoint full-screen shows — use windowed playback (Keynote: Play → Play in Window), or the macOS app, whose overlay stays above full-screen shows.
- Microphone and tab-share permissions require an HTTPS environment.
- Captions in a mobile browser aren’t supported yet — we recommend desktop.
- The browser extension is for Chromium-based desktop browsers only (Chrome, Edge, and similar) and requires signing in to newey.ai.
